IRVING, Texas (AM News Net) — Priest, author, and host of EWTN's Web of Faith Father John Trigilio addressed a crowd of people in town for the 2017 Fatima Summit this weekend, hosted by Catholic Action. The priest presented his thoughts on the state of the priesthood.

"One of the greatest lessons we've had in the Church is obviously the apparitions at Fatima," Trigilio said.

Trigilio says priests should be devoted to Mary, as one of the duties for the apostle John was to care for Mary. However, recent developments in the Church have begun to seperate priests from their mission, Trigilio says.

"We've had a current crisis so to speak for the past 50 or so years," he said.

Trigilio brought up three points that are a problem for the priesthood: apostasy, heresy, and sensuality. Decrying the saddedned state of affairs with some pastors, Trigilio expressed concern over priests and people who do not take the liturgy seriously, such as by dressing up in costumes at mass, teaching incorrect doctrine, or those who have been involved in the sex abuse scandals that have plagued the reputation of the Church.

"Some [priests] have left the faith, but they have not left their assignment," Trigilio said.

Praying for the future of the Church has been a reoccuring theme at the summit, and attendees will continue to listen to speeches and events for a stregnthening of faith throughout the night.

The evening will conclude with a keynote address by Cardinal Burke at 7:00 PM.
