Baylor Bears Get Revenge, Defeat Oklahoma Volleyball in Four SetsPosted 10/22/16, 9:07 PM CST
WACO (AM News Net) – The Baylor Bears volleyball team (6-2) was in a perfect position to extract some revenge this afternoon: ahead in spot three of Big 12 standings, and the Oklahoma Sooners (3-5) were coming to town. Last year, the Sooners swept the Bears on November 15th, their first road game. Today, the Bears managed to defeat Oklahoma in four sets (22-25, 25-11, 28-26, 27-25), ending a seven-game home losing streak to the Sooners. Sporting junior Katie Staiger, ranked fourth nationally in kills per set, the Bears were able to keep up the offensive pressure with 65 total attacks, 19 of which were recorded by Staiger, despite the incredible defensive effort. Of Oklahoma's 52 attacks, there were 25 errors. The Sooners defense put up an effort as well, despite the Bears making a total of ten blocks, double that of Oklahoma. This season, Baylor leads the Big 12 in blocks so far. But, the gap isn't as wide when looking at the digs, with Oklahoma ahead 68-66. However, the defense of both teams stepped up in the second half of the game, with both the third and fourth sets needing extra points to decide a winner, prompting numerous timeouts as the stakes got higher. The Bears in the end outperformed Oklahoma, scoring 79 points in total in comparison with the Sooners' 60 points at the end of the match. Baylor remains third in Big 12 standings, Oklahoma is now tied in fifth with Iowa State. For now, the Bears will have time to rest and relish their victory. Baylor will have a bye in the middle of next week, and will subsequently play away at Kansas State (4-3) on the 29th. © 2016 AM News Net. All rights reserved.
