FLOWER MOUND (AM News Net)  –  The 2016 season is a big one for the Flower Mound Jaguar football team. This year could be the one Flower Mound proves itself. Originally winning only one game last year against McKinney Boyd, the Jaguars came back with a vengeance last week against W.T. White, crushing them 65-14. Flower Mound fans were pumped, and despite a loss last night, are all in for supporting the new coach, Brian Basil. So what went wrong?

Jaguar RB Ifeanyichukwu Uzowihe scored the first touchdown of the game by running the ball in before five minutes had even passed in the game. However, the Jaguars missed the extra point, but nevertheless, scored another touchdown quickly after for a total of 13 points. The Jaguars finished the first quarter with a 13-7 lead over Fossil Ridge.

The Jaguars were unable to score again the rest of the half, but slipped up and allowed a safety three minutes until halftime. Fossil Ridge managed to continue pounding and then scored another touchdown and extra point, taking a 13-9 lead heading into the second half. The Fossil Ridge Panthers extended the lead to 23-13 by the end of the third quarter. 

With only one quarter left, the Jaguars tried another push, and managed to make a field goal at the beginning of the fourth, but could not continue. The game ended when the Panthers took a knee to finish 23-16.

Flower Mound head coach Brian Basil explained that the loss was an important lesson. 

"Fossil Ridge is a great football team," he said. "They got a lot of seniors back from a playoff team last year. They beat a good Arlington Martin. It went three rounds deep, so they're the real deal. You know, it's good for us. We were right in it. That's a playoff type football game and that would be a good lesson for us in non-district."

Basil commented on the change of who was dominating the offensive plays, which cost the Jaguars a victory.

"From the second quarter on in extended drives on third down, they were able to get off the field and we weren't." Basil said. "They had to have run 30, 35 more plays than we did, and that comes down to third down stops.

Basil says the team will face tough opponents like that in the regular season, so the Jaguars will fix any mistakes.

"We're going to learn from mistakes that we made and get them fixed by the time we get into District 5-6A," he said.

Despite some mistakes, if Flower Mound works on their offensive drives and can consistently make it out of third down positions, the Jaguars will definitely be a contender in 5-6A.

"I'm going to tell them I'm proud of them; they were never out of the fight, and we're going to get right back to work," Coach Basil said.
