3-0 Walk-Off Victory for Sooners Over TexasPosted 05/12/17, 4:25 PM
OKLAHOMA CITY (AM News Net) – Returning to ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, WCWS defending champions, the Sooners (18-1), top seeded in the Big 12 Conference, started their weekend in the Big 12 Softball Championships on Friday against the Longhorns (#4, 7-11). The Sooners, who just defeated Texas 3-0 has a chance to win two Big 12 championships in a row. Last time the conference held a championship for the playoffs in 2010, Oklahoma prevailed, the fourth time in conference championship history. The Longhorns were winners the same amount of times as well, the last of which was in 2005. Oklahoma, a Big 12 powerhouse for sure, entered the tournament with the Big 12 coach of the year, Patty Gasso, pitcher of the year, Paige Parker, player of the year, Shay Knighten, and freshman of the year, Nicole Mendes, all for the third consecutive time. Texas pitcher Tiarra Davis, entering the game with having thrown 100 innings, a record for the Longhorns, made one error during the game. Oklahoma's Paige Parker had none. While Oklahoma did a good job on defense, their offense also made plays. Sophomore Sydney Romero hit a two run home-run to start the game. An RBI in the sixth inning completed the scoring. As the Longhorns could not find a way to answer in the top of the seventh, the Sooners walked off with a victory to start the weekend.
