Texas Longhorns to Start Season Against Notre DamePosted 08/29/16, 5:53 PM CST
DALLAS (AM News Net) – It's finally college football season, and for many fans, the game to watch will be the second-winningest program against the third winningest program in college football history: Notre Dame vs Texas. At 6:42 PM, kickoff at Darrell K Royal Stadium will be broadcast live on ABC, featuring two teams with a history together. Out of all games played together, the Fighting Irish have bested the Longhorns nine out of 11 times. Texas has not beat Notre Dame since the 1970 Cotton Bowl. In addition to being the third time the Longhorns beat Notre Dame if Texas wins, it will be the first victory against Notre Dame in Austin. Out of 123 opening games at home, the Longhorns have only lost 14. Texas head coach Charlie Strong (11-14 record at UT), now in his third season at Austin, will be looking to keep enhancing his image, building on his 24-17 victory over Oklahoma last year. Strong also served as Notre Dame's defensive line coach from 1995-1998. Last season, the Fighting Irish finished with a 10-3 record, compared to the Longhorn's 5-7. However, Austin's opponents this year have a combined record of 89-64 from the 2015 season, which is the 26th most difficult schedule in the country. The Longhorns will have to rely on its younger players to carry the day. "Many Longhorns have gotten immeasurable experience during Charlie Strong's first two seasons," a Texas press release says. While the Longhorns have only 17 seniors on the team, underclassmen scored 33 of the 40 touchdowns last season and recorded 12 out of 13 interceptions. Although Texas fans won't know the outcome until the very end, a win will be their 887th win in Longhorn Football history and mark their 16th win to start the season in the past 17 years. Last time the Fighting Irish played at Austin, 83,312 fans attended the game. Sunday is expected to be a sellout, according to the University of Texas.
