Charlie Strong: There Will Be No Boycott of TCU GamePosted 11/22/16, 10:04 AM CST
AUSTIN (AM News Net) – After an embarrassing loss to the Kansas Jayhawks, who were only 1-9 at the time of the game, several Texas football players talked of boycotting the upcoming game on Friday against TCU. “Yeah, [talk of a boycott] was real, but we’re not going to boycott,” Texas senior Jacorey Warrick said to the American-Statesman. “We’re going to play. That was just people angry about expressing their thoughts. Coach Strong was not going to let us boycott that game.” Warrick further expressed that he wants Strong to say in a press conference on Monday. "[I think Charlie Strong should return] because I think that he's truly changed the program from within," he said. "Guys, when I was a freshman, I seen a lot of things that I thought were okay that now I look back on and they weren't okay, but they were, but you could kind of slide and get away with it. And now I just feel like, personally, I've matured so much since Coach Strong has been here." Players say the thoughts arose after Texas decided to fire head coach Charlie Strong after the 24-21 loss to Kansas. Some of the senior players are reportedly gathering the team to make sure there is not a boycott. "On Sunday had [sic] a team meeting with my players and they're an unbelievable group of young men," Charlie Strong said in a press conference on Monday. "And I told them then I said, guys, there's no, there's a lot of reports out there, there's no reason for you to worry about me and the things you've been doing for the last two weeks, because I could just tell on the field how we have been playing not to lose." Strong also thinks the team should go out and play, no matter any controversy around him or his future. "And I said, we have one game left, and it's important we go out and play this game and we go play this game for our seniors, because they deserve to get to a bowl game," Strong said. The loss on Saturday clearly affected the team. "I could just see the look in some of their eyes how frustrated they were about that loss on Saturday," Strong continued. Strong, who also led the Longhorns to a double-overtime victory over Notre Dame, told the press any decision made about his future career at Texas will be made after the upcoming game and that he does not believe a final decision has been made already. "I tell you this, I had a, I spoke yesterday with Mike and the thing about it, Greg and I have spoken after every game, and he's been up front and I've been told that we will be evaluated at the end of the season, after the last game at TCU, a decision will be made," he said. The Longhorns (5-6) will host TCU (5-5) at Darrell K. Royal Stadium this Friday at 2:30 PM. Strong remains confident that there will be no boycott. "That won't happen," Strong said. "They won't boycott this game. No, this game is about the seniors and they know how very important it is and that's not going to happen." © 2016 AM News Net. All rights reserved.
