NCAA D2 Update: TWU Volleyball Loses Conference OpenerPosted 09/17/16, 11:24 AM CST
SAN ANGELO (AM News Net) – The TWU Pioneers volleyball (0-1) team fell in three sets yesterday in the conference opening game against Angelo State (1-0), a team that upset Wheeling Jesuit and Central Missouri last week. Wheeling Jesuit was the highest ranked team defeated in program history, according to the Lone Star Conference.The Pioneers were unable to come out with a win against this surprising team, losing in three sets: 25-12, 25-16 and 25-18. TWU's Sara Oxford and Makayla Mayfield both earned six kills to combine for over half of the kills earned by TWU, but were unable to match Angelo State's 47 kills through out the game. The Pioneers are now tied in the Lone Star Conference standings with UT Permian Basin, Cameron, and Eastern and Western New Mexico. Any indication for the rest of the season would not be conclusive, however. TWU will play at Tarleton for their second conference game this season at Tarleton (1-0). FORT WORTH (AM News Net) – TCU Volleyball (6-3) dropped a chance to win a game against SMU (13-5) last night, losing to the Mustangs in four sets. Despite being ahead 9-2 to start the match, and finishing the first set 25-17, the Frogs were unable to follow through the rest of the game. SMU came back to win the last three sets 25-20, 25-19, and 25-20. "I think we were kind of our own worst enemy tonight," TCU Volleyball director Jill Kramer said.
