Oklahoma Defeats Auburn to Become WCWS ChampsPosted 06/08/16, 10:57 PM
OKLAHOMA CITY (AM News Net) – The stage was set for a grand finale. The Sooners, who were expecting to sweep Auburn in the 2016 WCWS finals when they were up 7-0 in the second game, suddenly found that their 31 game winning streak came to an end after a walk-off grand slam by Auburn's Emily Carosone. Despite the setback, the Sooners became 2016 WCWS champions after winning 2-1 over Auburn. The Sooners, who won the first game starting Paige Parker as their pitcher, did not have her pitch at all during the second game, and instead had her help record stats. Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso justified the decision, explaining that Parker would be too tired to be effective in a possible third game. Parker started the final game, and was able to prevent Auburn's offense from being effective. In addition, Auburn's defense suffered, most notably seen by a strange slip up by Auburn's Emily Carosone when she dropped the ball, allowing Oklahoma runners to advance. "I don't get it," Carosone said. "That's never happened before, but it happened today. It slipped." Carosone seemed to accept the mistake, but junior Kasey Cooper took it harder, beginning to tear up at the press conference. "I'm frustrated to the fact that we know we're better," Cooper said. "But I'm more frustrated that we didn't have Emily's back. Emily had a bad game, and we weren't there for her, and we're better." Nevertheless, Auburn head coach Clint Myers was proud of the team. "I'm very proud of these young ladies," he said. "They gave their heart, their soul. They gave their commitment." Meyers recalled numerous times Auburn was thought to be down for good, but came back and fought on, such as after the games against Arizona, and after the first finals game against Oklahoma. "I believe each of these young ladies with their commitment, their drive, what they've learned so far as life lessons has made the world a better place," Myers said. Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso also commended the Auburn team. "And I also need to absolutely congratulate Auburn," Gasso said. "What a great team. Very well-coached. They made us have to play so much better." Gasso then recounted the path Oklahoma took to get to the championships, playing tough teams such as Alabama, LSU, and Michigan. "We played some of the best in the country," she said. "So I definitely feel like this team earned every second of our success because they played from the first pitch to the last." The win is the third time in the program's history that the Sooners' have secured a national title. Check back for more photos from AM News Net to recap the events. © 2016 AM News Net.
