NFHS Volleyball Rule Changes to Take EffectPosted 06/26/16, 12:15 PM
INDIANAPOLIS (AM News Net) – High school volleyball teams across the country may be donning new uniforms this coming season to be in compliance with new rules set forth by the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS). The rules, decided back in January 2014, were made to help distinguish the libero from other players. The libero will now have to wear uniforms that follow the new requirements. “The libero and/or his/her teammates shall wear a solid-colored uniform top,” a released article from the NFHS said. “The solid-colored uniform top shall clearly contrast from the predominant primary color(s) of the teammates’ uniform top, with the predominant color(s) being the color(s) appearing on approximately half of the uniform.” In addition, the sleeves of the libero’s uniform must be the same color as the rest of the top of the jersey. Teams are free to add trim of different colors to the sleeves, but the trim must be no wider than one inch. The NFHS explained the current uniforms were making it difficult for referees to tell who the libero was and would interfere with the referees trying to determine who was making a legal play. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is a member of the NFHS. Some school’s uniforms may already be in compliance, so they are unlikely to be affected. The rules take effect this Friday, July 1st. The NFHS explains the time since the rule was passed allowed schools to become in compliance and remanufacture their uniforms. More rules regarding referees and illegal substitutions were added as well. The complete set of rules can be read here. © 2016 AM News Net. All rights reserved.
