Big 12 Volleyball Update: Kansas & Texas Tied for FirstPosted 11/01/16, 5:40 PM CST
DALLAS (AM News Net) – The pressure is on as Big 12 volleyball standings look a lot different this week: There is a first place tie in the standings and Baylor moving into second. The then-undefeated Texas Longhorns (9-1) dropped a game to Kansas (9-1) last week, the first UT loss to the Jayhawks since 2003, and marking the end of their conference season without a loss. The defeat resulted in a tie for first place in the Big 12, allowing Baylor (6-3) to move up a position. The match, which lasted five sets (17-25, 25-11, 27-25, 12-25, 15-10), is the Jaywalks' eighth win in a row, and their 14th consecutive win at home. The Longhorns have lost their 25-game win streak over the Jayhawks. "It was critical to get off to a decent start, other than the missed serve start," Kansas Volleyball head coach Ray Bechard said about the game. "We played really well. Texas has set a great standard that we're all trying to chase down. That team made us better tonight. That's what I told the team. Hopefully other teams feel the same way about us." Bechard, however, thinks the team just barely pulled off the win at the end. "I had absolutely no confidence after the fourth set," he said. "I shouldn't say that. In volleyball we just need to make one play and the momentum switches." Kansas junior outside hitter Madison Rigdon explained she did not want to give up on the match. "I didn't want to just roll over and give up, I'm glad that they fought back and we fought back," Rigdon said. "It was a great match." The Jayhawks will continue their season against Kansas State tomorrow in Manhattan. Other Big 12 games tomorrow include the Longhorns at TCU, Baylor at Texas Tech, and West Virginia at Iowa. It appears likely that No. 2 Texas and No. 6 Kansas will remain tied for a little longer. The full Big 12 volleyball standings can be seen here.
