SMU Football Sunk by NavyPosted 11/26/16 9:05 PM
DALLAS (AM News Net) – Leading the all time series and already having clinched the AAC West Division, the Navy Midshipmen (9-2) traveled down to Dallas to play rival SMU (5-7). The Midshipmen, who won the past six games against the Mustangs, including a 55-14 win last year, sunk them again this afternoon, inundating the Mustangs with touchdowns and interceptions to win 75-31. Despite SMU being the only FBS school with three players with four picks or more, and scoring the first touchdown minutes into the game, the Mustangs could not keep up the pressure into the second half. SMU quarterback Ben Hicks' 331 yards and pair of touchdowns was not enough when the defense broke down. The Midshipmen were locked in after an eight yard touchdown pass to Jamir Tillman in the last few seconds of the first half, shortly followed by multiple touchdowns immediately in the third quarter. The loss stops the Mustangs from becoming bowl eligible, unless not enough teams have .500 records at the end of the season. The loss was not the only thing on the SMU team's mind. Head coach Chad Morris is rumored to be going to Baylor, but Morris quickly moved off the subject in the press conference after the game. "I'd rather not comment on that [Baylor situation]," he said. Morris focused on the game and how the team performed against a formidable team such as Navy. "It felt like our offense was executing pretty well," he said. Despite this, Morris highlighted the speed and skill of the Midshipmen cost the Mustangs, resulting in plays such as the touchdown pass in the end of the first half, and a touchdown and pick six after, which allowed Navy to score 21 points in only a few minutes of game time. "It's really tough in a game like this where Navy is executing at such a high level," Coach Morris said. The loss means the Midshipmen now have won seven of the consecutive games against SMU, and are now 11-7 in the series. More AM News Net photos of the game can be found here. © 2016 AM News Net.
