Sooners Sweep Big 12 Titles After Championship Victory Over Cowgirls

OKLAHOMA CITY (AM News Net) – Having gone undefeated in the Big 12 Softball Championship all weekend, the Sooners' final rivals, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, were all that stood in their way to receiving their fifth Big 12 Championship title and the trophy. Oklahoma defeated the Cowgirls 2-0 Saturday night, obtaining their fifth Big 12 tournament champion title, the most in conference history. Oklahoma finished first in the Big 12 in regular season play, as well, marking the second time in program history for the Sooners to sweep the regular season title and tournament title. The win was cause to celebrate, however, the Sooners seemed to get nervous early on when starting pitcher Paige Parker allowed Oklahoma State to hit a lead-off double in the first inning, causing a timeout so the Sooners could discuss what was going on. Parker, who quickly went back to her award-winning pitching as usual, continued to pitch for 5.1 innings with no errors or runs allowed. The Cowgirls tried to keep up. Offensively, both teams recorded four hits and were able to put runners on bases with the same frequency. However, OSU senior pitcher Brandi Needham, who pitched every inning in the game, was unable to stop Oklahoma junior Nicole Pendley from hitting a two-run home-run in the fourth inning. The game continued as had the first half, with no more runs being brought in on either team. As Oklahoma State could not tie the game in the top of the seventh, the Sooners rushed the field to celebrate and receive their trophy. The win guaranteed the a spot for Oklahoma to move on further into the playoffs. There are currently six open spots to be decided. Oklahoma will found out their regional playoff opponent tonight on the NCAA Softball Championship Selection Special on ESPN2 at 9:00 PM CT.
