Oklahoma Softball Head Coach Patty Gasso on Her CoachingPosted 06/28/16, 4:40 PM
OKLAHOMA CITY (AM News Net) – Oklahoma Softball head coach Patty Gasso gave her thoughts on her third WCWS win on the air with KOCO-TV yesterday. In 2013, the Sooners had stronger hitters, but this year the lineup was composed of many freshman and sophomore players, according to Gasso. It seemed that her team was the underdogs going up against Auburn in the finals. "I think no one expected it to happen," Gasso said. Nevertheless, Gasso was confident the girls were prepared. "I didn't have to a lot to them," she said. "The real key was a championship mindset, just playing together as a team, and not being afraid to make mistakes." Gasso continued, and explained that the key was recruiting the best players. Once a team finds the right players, they can begin to work them into the system, Gasso says. "In the summer, it's travelling all over the country and looking for the best players and following them," she said. "The entire summer and a lot of the fall is dedicated to going out and finding great players." One of the tough parts though for Gasso was balancing the work and travel with her family. Gasso faced having to stop coaching because the money was not coming in, but that changed after winning in 2000. But disregarding the pay, Gasso thinks there is a higher purpose in her work. "My work is not just done on the softball field," she said. "It's raising young girls to become women and get ready for the real world. There is professional softball but it doesn't pay a lot of money, so its getting them ready for the real world. And that's really what my commitment came to: making a change in their lives." This year is Gasso's 22nd coaching Oklahoma. "I think we shocked the world and made history again." The full interview can be watched here. © 2016 AM News Net. All rights reserved.
