One Month Until High School Fall Sports Practice May BeginPosted 07/03/16, 11:43 PM CST
AUSTIN (AM News Net) – Texas high school sports teams will be able to begin practicing in just under a month. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) has released a tentative schedule for when high school fall sports teams may begin practicing and playing. For volleyball, August 1st is the day the they can begin issuing equipment and working out. All conferences may begin playing scrimmages on August 5th. August 8th marks when teams may begin actual matches, although there are some restrictions. "A team is limited to the allowance of two contests per calendar week (Monday through Saturday) plus a tournament," the UIL schedule says. "Three matches may be played during the first two calendar weeks allowed for matches (according to the official UIL calendar). If school is in session, the one contest per school week rule must be followed." In addition, teams must meet uniform requirements that took effect July 1st. For Texas high school football teams, the calendar is slightly different, depending on if the team has held spring training. For football teams that had spring training, their first day of conditioning may begin on August 8th. If they did not practice over the spring, they may begin August 1st. Teams with spring training may begin practicing with contact on August 12th, and may begin their first scrimmage on the 19th. These teams may opt to play a second scrimmage, but must not play during week one of their season. "Schools opting for a second scrimmage shall not play during week one," the UIL schedule says.
