Lady Marauders Route McKinney Boyd 17-2by Anthony Mazur
posted 04/16/16 FLOWER MOUND – After losing two games to Flower Mound and Plano West, both by at least ten runs, Marcus softball (10-12, 5th in 6-6A) was set to turn around the next two games. On Tuesday the Lady Marauders defeated Plano East by one run, and last night routed McKinney Boyd (3-15, 9th in 6-6A) 17-2 in five innings. “Last game we did really well,” Marcus sophomore Ashlyn Lerma said. “But, I think we could do better this time and improve.” With Marcus senior Lexi Cushing is second in the division for batting with 10 home runs, and with energetic sophomore Ashlyn Lerma in the batting orders, the Marauder bats did not wait to erupt. McKinney Boyd allowed ten runs in just the 1st inning, Lerma being the second run of the night by diving into home, and ran home again next time she was up in the batting order, stealing bases for much of the game. Lerma thinks that her strategy of stealing bases all the time is successful and shocks players in the high school divisions. “I know I have the capability of [stealing bases] so I just go for it,” she said. “People in select are used to it, but if they’re just in school, I don’t think so.” By the end of the third, the lady Marauders led 14-1, and in the fourth increased the lead to 17-2. Boyd was unable to earn runs in the top of the fifth, ending the game there. Marcus will play an away game against Plano on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
