SMU Mustangs Selected in 2017 NBA DraftPosted 06/23/17, 10:18 AM
NEW YORK (AM News Net) – Thursday night marked a milestone for the SMU Basketball program. For the first time in their program history, multiple Mustangs were picked in the first two rounds of the NBA draft. Semi Ojeleye was picked 37th overall by the Boston Celtics and Sterling Brown was picked 46th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers. This is the first time since 2001 that a former SMU player was selected in the draft. Although this isn't the first time multiple Mustangs were selected, such as in 1985, 1957, and even in 1969 when three were selected, this is the first time multiple were chosen in the first two rounds. Ojeleye, the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, averaged 19.0 points a game, third overall in the AAC. Ojeleye shot at 48.7 percent overall and 42.4 when outside the three-point line. Ojeleye, who majored in psychology and was the American Scholar-Athlete of the Year , also earned the title of AAC All-Tournament Most Outstanding Player, made the All-AAC First Team, USBWA All-District VII and NABC All-District 25 First Team. Brown led the AAC in three-point percentage at 44.9 this season for the second year in a row. Brown, who played in a program-record 109 victories in his time at SMU ranked among career leaders in points (1,110, 31st), rebounds (653, 15th), assists (294, 15th), steals (139, 9th), blocks (51, T-23rd), field goal percentage (50.4, 14th) and threes made (128, 11th). Brown graduated with a major in sports management and a minor in sociology. The two helped the Mustangs achieve a record-setting season, going 30-5, remaining undefeated at home with 18 wins, and a 16 game winning streak in an effort to reach the NCAA tournament.
